But then she simply got her cousin and left. Thank goodness there’s a second book, but oh my gosh I don’t want to wait another year.įirst of all, I really thought the cat killed everyone and there were dismembered body parts everywhere when Tress tried to get help. My head is still spinning and I can’t believe what I just read. I loved them all.īefore I even finished this book, I knew I wouldn’t be able to do a review without spoilers. And her use of the cat for some of the alternating chapters? Brilliant. The pain and emotion that these two girls feel throughout the novel really grips at my heart. I’m not one for revenge novels, but I love that McGinnis used one of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories as inspiration. This novel alternates between the past and the present, but I was never confused as to what was happening. This book is no different, and the difficult relationship she has woven between two girls is beautiful in its tragedy. Her writing style has always kept me intrigued and her plot has always kept me reading until the very last page. 5/24/2023 0 Comments The murder on malabar hillHowever, there was tolerance as they were under the protection of Spain and had crucial roles in banking and finance that made them a financial asset. In the years leading up to the Massacre of 1391, Jews were not particularly liked by the Catholic church because they were believed to have crucified the Christ. The year 1391, however, marked a peak of anti-Jewish violence. Jews in the Iberian Peninsula at this time were generally disliked, and violence against them was common even until the 15th century. It was one of the Middle Ages' worst antisemitic outbreaks Jews were ultimately given the choice of converting or leaving Spain in 1492. The Massacre of 1391, also known as the pogroms of 1391, was a display of antisemitism and violence against Jews in Spain. He argues that horror films reveal how the category of the other is not fixed. The horror film’s depiction of such minorities can be sympathetic to their exclusion or complicit in their oppression, but ultimately, these images are understood to stand in for the others that the majority dreads and marginalizes.Īdam Lowenstein offers a new account of horror and why it matters for understanding social otherness. What do horror films reveal about social difference in the everyday world? Criticism of the genre often relies on a dichotomy between monstrosity and normality, in which unearthly creatures and deranged killers are metaphors for society’s fear of the “others” that threaten the “normal.” The monstrous other might represent women, Jews, or Blacks, as well as Indigenous, queer, poor, elderly, or disabled people. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Young goodman brown reviewIt was stated that “it was now deep dusk in the forest, and deepest in that part of it where these two were journeying” (Hawthorne par. This was first indicated when Goodman allegedly met a man, a companion someone who was expected to accompany him in his travel. The deep dark forest was subsequently disclosed as part of the setting for the short story. At this scenario, readers start to anticipate and wonder where Goodman Brown would go and what important endeavor he needs to comply with to justify leaving his young wife, who, as the story revealed, he was married to for only three months. The purpose was partially revealed through the statements which were disclosed as “Goodman Brown felt justified in making more haste on his present evil purpose” (Hawthorne par. The initial setting revealed that the journey to be undertaken by Goodman Brown was at nighttime and where he apparently left his young wife at their abode to undertake an apparently dark purpose. The setting is the literary element that is the focus of the current critical analysis because it provided visual images to the readers which assisted in a greater understanding of the meaning relayed in this narrative discourse. At this particular instance, it was revealed that the story starts with Goodman leaving his wife to go through a journey at nighttime. 5/24/2023 0 Comments The Blacksmith by Barbara HoweGrace fully embraces her role as both a creator and a fan of science fiction and fantasy. This is because we have fallen under the spell of emotivism, “the doctrine that all evaluative judgments and more specifically all moral judgments are nothing but expressions of preference, expressions of attitude or feeling” (11-2, emphasis his). (2)Īccording to MacIntyre, the language of contemporary morality lacks the common ground necessary to measure moral assertions as true or false people cannot agree on matters of moral veracity because their respective moral universes have so little in common with one another. But we have––very largely, if not entirely––lost our comprehension, both theoretical and practical, of morality. We possess simulacra of morality, we continue to use many of the key expressions. The language of morality is in… state of grave disorder…What we possess, if this view is true, are fragments of a conceptual scheme, parts which now lack those contexts from which their significance derived. This is a grand and fascinating journey through the history of ethics, fueled by MacIntyre’s argument for a modern renaissance of Aristotelian thought. Several chapters from Alasdair MacIntyre’s After Virtue were instrumental in my undergraduate thesis, but I never got around to reading the whole book until now. 5/23/2023 0 Comments Tempted by megan hartShe is working hard to grow the business, and doesn’t seem to have much time for a personal life. The plot of Stranger: Grace has taken over her family business – a mortuary – from her father. I did appreciate it a lot when I read it because it was both different and well-written – a combination that is harder to find than you’d think. Jennie: Dirty seems to be a favorite with a lot of Hart’s fans, from what I can tell. I would place Stranger second after Dirty in my Hart hierarchy. I enjoyed the edgier aspects of Broken but had a lot of trouble with the ending, and the short, "Reason Enough," disappointed me with the way Elle seemed to have transformed into a baby-wanting Suburban wife so quickly after her marriage to Dan. I have not read Tempted yet, and I haven’t read anything before Dirty. Janet: Dirty is still my favorite of the Hart books I’ve read. Unfortunately, I had some major problems with Stranger, as well, and I think I’ve identified some aspects of Hart’s writing that I dislike. I was less enamored of Tempted, but figured that not every book is going to work for me, even if the author is one I enjoy. Jennie: I was very happy when I discovered Megan Hart’s Harlequin Spice books a couple of years ago – I read Dirty and Broken in short order, and liked them both a lot.
