5/19/2023 0 Comments Amsterdam ian mcewan review![]() ![]() For me, any good short story must be elegant and must capture a moment. ![]() This is the third McEwan novel that I have read, and each of those have read like long short stories. This review will be wordier, but I take solace in believing that that quote was lifted from something longer as well. Not another word is needed to tell the reader what to expect, and McEwan’s novel is certainly worthy of this admirable blurb. I could write an entire essay in praise of the Sunday Telegraph quote on the front cover, “A psychologically brilliant study of heartlessness.” Never has a novel been more succinctly paraphrased than this description of Amsterdam. A list of the reviews I have completed so far can be found on my archives page. This post is part of a series of reviews of all the Man Booker Prize winners since I was born. ![]() 5/19/2023 0 Comments A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies![]() "The final chapter adds a few heart-pounding twists to the story, which leaves readers panting for a sequel. With the way the ending went, there's no way we're not getting a crazy, violent and brutal Batman. Supposedly, this is going to be a 3 part series so I'm hoping that he plans on finishing strong. He's so good here and has steadily improved on what he brought to the table with Cacophony. I feel like such a heel saying that about the book because I'm a massive fan of Walt's artwork. ![]() However, it doesn't make up for all the strange "happy" Batman/Bruce Wayne stuff. Granted, it's not all bad - he wrote a decent scene between Bats and Catwoman. I mean, there's no other way to describe it. In a word, Kevin's writing here is just weird. It kind of made me forget about all the strangeness that led up to it. My problem with the ending is that it makes the entire novel seem better than it deserves to be. As Kevin wrote in the afterword, there's no one that could have predicted that. ![]() My main problem with this book is the ending. So I knew that he probably just wrote a bad arc, it happens. I mean, I love the guy's work! Big fan of his movies and podcasts I also really enjoyed his Daredevil and Spider-Man runs. Already, my hopes were probably too high. ![]() In my review of Batman: Cacophony, I stated that I had high hopes for the sequel in which Kevin Smith promised a superior story. In fact, I'm such a Kevin Smith fan that I think it may be the only reason I'm giving this a 3 star rating over a 2 or a 2.5. ![]() |
